Bunds are built in low lying areas during crop seasons. In the monsoon seasons the flow of water through the rivers increase and the bunds holding out the water collapse. The fields get submerged with water leading to major loss of crops. The farmers struggle to reconstruct the outer bunds in the paddy polders.

A spate of bund breaches across the Kuttanad region throws paddy cultivation into deeper crisis. Now projects to prevent damage of crops due to bund breaching are implemented in Kuttanad.

After the crop seasons, the bunds would be breached manually to let in salinity to the fields to facilitate the growth of fish population.
